A looping video with me using just the HOG and two delay pedals.  Taken with my digital camera, so the quality is crap, but whatever.  It was fun.

Cheap delay and a DIY pedal

Board update!

February board

Got a second Echohead because they were on clearance at Musician’s Friend.  I’m not really sure how to use two delays yet, but I couldn’t pass up the deal.  I then altered my tap tempo box to have tap tempo switches for both pedals.  While I was at it I did a little bit of nicer artwork on my looper and the tap tempo box: permanent marker covered in scotch tape!

This meant my Looper is not off the board, which is fine, because I’m OK carrying it along when I know I’m doing looping, otherwise there’s not really a reason to have it on the board.  Someday I’ll have an EHX 2880 anyway, which will have a dedicated board with it’s foot controller.

Anywho, I started work on a DIY noisegate.  I have the enclosure there just filling in space while I wait on the PCB components.  I etched my own PCB for it, and will post a little step by step pictorial about that whole process when we get that far.

Little Jake Model “H”

In conjunction with Paul Hanson, I’ve created the Model “H” of my Little Jake bassoon pickup.  This is identical to the normal Little Jake, but with the threaded interface that Paul uses with his FRAP.  This provides a more secure connection with the bocal.

Because this will not come out of the bocal if there is a pull on the chord, I highly recommend that you attach the wire to the long joint before the slack of the wire goes to the preamp.  This will assure that if you accidentally tug on the wire it won’t break the Little Jake!

Board re-do

Recarpeted the effects board and changed the signal chain around while I had everything off the old carpet.  Turns out I like the envelope filter after dirt after all, even though I didn’t think it would work at first.  Frequency Analyzer also sounds better after the envelope filter, not before, and sounds just fine after dirt, so it all works out.

Chain is now EQ > HOG > (Direct out to Mixer) Effect out > Noise Box > Distortion Booster > MMM > DFW Envelope FIlter > Frequency Analyzer > Small Stone > TB Loop > (Send to Mixer) > Return from Mixer blends in dry signal from HOG and microphones if needed, else > Echohead > RC-2 > Amp.

Very versatile and everything sounds great!

Some multimedia

I don’t know why I keep using this performance of these miniatures.  I guess because it’s unaccompanied, and since nobody knows it I can’t get too much flack for my interpretation (except from the composer!).  But anyway, I got the  DVD of this recital from my mom today, so I upped the video of this part to youtube.  In all it’s audio glory.

David Basden’s “Seven Miniatures for Bassoon”

I also got a bit of an idea to do a tango with my looping equipment, so I did Libertango a la electric bassoon.  It works well, although I haven’t figured out how to end it yet.  The ending on this was more or less a mistake that I just kinda ran with.

New bassoon tool

that’s not a pedal!  For once.

Today I got my “Ultimate Reed Finisher” from Justin Miller (millermarketing).  I had him send a second template for me to try out as well as the default template, but the second one doesn’t actually fit in the machine, so we’ll see what Justin has to say about that.

It’s a pretty slick little device though.  Without changing anything from how it was already set up I clipped the tip on a blank and used the machine on it.  Very smooth operation.  You only need one pass to make the complete cut due to how the blade is curved and prepraed by the spring.  The reed sagged the E and was about 40 cents flat, but it’s expected to sag and be flat when a reed is brand spankin’ new.  We’ll see how the pitch comes up in the next few days.  The reed responded very well though and was very easy to play compared to the same blank before the turn on the machine.

Set me back $2000.  The money came directly out of the sale of my old Wolf bassoon, otherwise there’s no way I could afford such a thing.  It’s going to make my reed life much happier though.  Lifelong investment.

A couple of noodlings

Don Belt wanted some clips of me using the HOG and the Metal Muff.  So I made some.  First clip is some looping I did.  Some Frequency Analzyer and the Noisebox in the background, later some Vox distortion.  The soloing is with various stuff, lots of HOG use and the DFW that Don made for me.  I couldn’t get the delay setting to be at the right tempo for the second half, so it’s not a really solid groove – sorry, I was doing it on the fly.  The second one is just a few tidbits of some speed metal kind of stuff.  My double-tonguing was far from perfect, so luckily the distortion covers a lot up!  Should be good for a laugh anyway.

The last 10 seconds of the second one are quite a little trip.  🙂

New Pedal Day

Sold my Devi Ever Bit to a guy at C.V. Lloyd today and used the proceeds to buy a Micro Metal Muff.  The Bit just didn’t work with the bassoon, and after trying a few pedals out at the store the MMM was the most versitile and compatible with the bassoon.  Had some bad feedback in the store but not at home, so that’s good.Board as of 11-23-08

No sound clips with the MMM, but here’s some improvising using a lot of Frequency Analyzer.  I start with more effects and remove them for the most part throughout the improvising.  I used the Vox distortion at the beginning.  The echo is actually the Mod Filter setting on the delay pedal.

The first thing a guy does with a new toy…

Is take it apart!

I’m utterly confused why EHX hasn’t been putting LED indicators in the Frequency Analyzer all these years.  They are just now coming out with a new model that does, but the one I got is the giant box that you typically see.  But I knew you could add an LED pretty easy, so with some help from some Harmony Central guys I wired up a pale green LED in the chassis of my crazy sound box.
